MTV Cribs: Bus Edition
Bus life...
It's kind of like camping in an RV...with 9 of your coworkers...for 3 1/2 months...
Actually, I quite enjoy bus life! Yes, it's crowded and we are all many different personalities forced into one small space...but there are also lots of laughs!
Our tour travels with big rigs and 2 tour busses each with a trailer attached to the back. We have 4 drivers and 20 passengers, so only 24 humans total on our tour! Our bus consists of the driver's cockpit, a front lounge with a half kitchen, a toilet and shower, a sleeping/bunk area, and a back lounge.
The cockpit has a driver and passenger seat, and a sliding door that can separate the cockpit from the front lounge if the driver wants some privacy. The bus is generally on the road between 12am and 9am, so unless I choose to forego a night of sleep, I don't plan on riding in the passenger seat anytime soon. The front lounge is the area where I spend the most time. There is a TV with Direct TV that is on pretty much 24/7. I stayed in for the night the other day and The Office was on, so I played it in the background while I organized/labeled all of the shelves and drawers like my typical Type A self. We can order any snacks we want to stock up the bus. This is called Bus stock. Our favorite snacks include Cheez its, Ramen, Potato Chips, Fruit snacks, coconut water, and ginger shots. Believe it or not, having an endless supply of snacks at your disposal does get old rather quickly.
We have a small toilet and shower on the bus. The toilet is strictly LIQUIDS ONLY. No toilet paper. No poop. So adjust your schedule accordingly. The shower is used as a storage space since we shower at the venues. We have a hanging shoe rack inside, so it doesn't smell very good in there.
The next section of the bus is the sleeping area. There are 12 bunks on the bus: 4 sections of 3. We have 9 members in the cast plus our company manager which means we have 2 extra bunks (junk bunks) that we use for storage. Our big suitcases are stored underneath the bus, so most of us keep small duffle bags or backpacks on the bus with whatever we might need during the day. We keep those bags in the junk bunks so we don't have to sleep with them.
The back lounge is basically just more storage and seating and another TV. We have yet to use the TV for anything because it uses the same remote as the front lounge. I bought an HDMI cord so I could set up movies to play from my laptop, but both monitors are mounted in a way that blocks access to the hdmi ports. I also brought karaoke and I'm very sad about not being able to hook that up either. We did have one movie night in the back where we watched "10 Things I Hate About You" on my laptop, but the back lounge has been mostly used for naps thus far.
So that's our little house on wheels!
